Produced with Pride and Grown Exclusively in Trat, Thailand
A wide variety of chocolate-flavoured teas are available on the market, but the most delicious ones are made from cocoa beans. To get cacao seeds, the cacao pod must be cracked open. What is left are the cocoa beans.
After roasting, the cocoa beans are separated into cocoa nibs (inner layer) and cocoa shells or husk (outer layer). Most of the chocolate that we eat comes from the nibs and chocolate tea comes from cocoa shells that are used to create aromatic loose leaf teas.
It is imperative not to waste chocolate, as it is a sin. So we make use of every piece of the cocoa bean. One of permaculture’s central principle is too ‘produce no waste’, as an aversion to wastefulness, what the Japanese call mottainai.

Cacao tea is high in antioxidants and flavanoids
In studies, cacao husks were found to be rich in antioxidants and flavonoids. The flavonoids act as antioxidants, helping to fight free radicals that cause cell damage. Furthermore, flavanoids may be beneficial for preventing arterial clogs, improving blood flow, and improving cognitive function. In addition to reducing cancer risks, flavonoids may also reduce risks of cardiovascular disease, heart disease, asthma, stroke, and diabetes.
Research shows that cacao is the most flavonoid-rich food of all the foods we consume, even greater than tea and red wine. No wonder it is known as the ‘food of the gods’.
Delicious energy boost
You’ll feel more energised and focused without the harsh effects of caffeine when you drink cacao tea. There is a high concentration of theobromine in cacao husks, which is an effective bioactive compound that keeps the brain and heart stimulated and active. In addition to being a natural stimulant, theobromine releases its effects gradually. According to research, patients who consumed cacao rich in theobromine reported improved concentration, brain stimulation, and interest in studying. In addition, patients reported reduced mental fatigue and improved performance.
Decreased blood pressure
Chocolate husks contain valuable compounds such as theobromine, as discussed above. This compound widens blood vessels, which leads to lower blood pressure. Studies have shown that even small amounts of theobromine lower blood pressure significantly in as little as one hour after consumption. Another study found that taking theobromine-rich cacao over a three-week period decreased blood pressure.
Positive effects on the mood
Scientists have discovered that cacao husks are rich in flavonoids, which possess memory-enhancing qualities. Theobromine also appears to possess important pharmacological functions, including anti-cancer and muscle-relaxing properties. Cacao contains a powerful stimulant, theobromine, which is responsible for some of our cravings for chocolate. If you drink calorie-free cacao tea, you can satisfy that craving!
